Moving bus stops

Posted by mwbg on 6 September 2011 in English (English)

I seem to keep coming across naptan-source bus stops which are in the middle of buildings or otherwise in silly places.
What's the procedure for moving a bus stop, assuming I have an accurate position for such ?
I assume I can't just move it manually, because it would get overwritten with the next naptan import.

It's good to move the bus stop, and keep all the tags (but delete NAPTAN:verified=no) so it can be spotted when/if a fresher Naptan import is made. It's known the bus stops aren't so accurate. Even if the bus stop is in the right place, it's good to remove the verified tag so we know it's right.

You may also wish to add the tag shelter=yes (if you are somewhat protected from the wind/rain) and bench=yes (if you can sit down there).

Also check the wiki for bus route relations. http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Bus_routes You can add the bus stops, and the appropriate stretch of road alongside. Route relations are used in a number of places, my favourite being http://opencyclemap.org/?lat=52.18986&lon=-2.22062&zoom=14&layers=0B

This tool helps you find bus stops that still need checking. http://mappa-mercia.org/novam/

NaPTAN imported bus stops were surveyed by a human, who may have done a great job or a very poor job or anywhere in between. If it's in the wrong place move it. Imports are not special, they are just part of the database like everything else and therefore subject to improvement when that is possible.

See this page for a recommended procedure for Naptan bus stops: http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/NaPTAN/Surveying_and_Merging_NaPTAN_and_OSM_data

Also, there is a JOSM style which can highlight Naptan bus stops, and whether they have been verified (similar to that Novam tool). See http://josm.openstreetmap.de/wiki/Styles
