When you 'discover' a city that is not on OSM

Posted by ff5722 on 4 February 2017 in English (English)

If you map in the West you may come to think that the major stuff in OSM is done, but in developing countries, you may discover major unmapped features.

But that is not a city in terms of the meaning of place=city in OSM.

In general having settlements of this size not mapped beyond a node is nothing rare in OSM. It was not rare in Europe 5-7 years back either.

An active Chinese mapper, what a wonder! :)

On a serious note, It can be that some mappers are not good at detecting roads-vs-paths in Chinese mountains using imagery, especially if this locality has no other sources.

And even where we have a place-tag don't forget that we have still tons of unmapped places: http://resultmaps.neis-one.org/unmapped#2/23.7/3.5
