Editing Ennis of Republic of Ireland

Posted by Ying Li on 19 September 2013 in English.

I added a few marks of the area that have not been marked before. I made those changes according to a local map I obtained in Ennis during my travel there in May 2012. Some area is still a bit empty though. There are many areas and roads that my map doesn’t cover. I will try to find some other sources for future editing.

This is my first contribution to the community. Feeling excited!

Welcome to OSM !

But : copying from copyrighted maps is a No-No for OSM. Even for “factual” things like the name of a street, we are required to avoid copryrighted sources, for legal reasons and because we want osm data to be freely redistributable.

The local map that you got is very probably copyrighted by the Ordinance Survey Ireland, which makes it unsuitable for OSM. When you are not sure about the licence of a data source, it is best to assume the source isn’t usable.

I’m sorry but anything that you maped and isn’t known from a proper source (such as your survey notes, holiday photos, Bing imagery, or GSGS out-of-copyright maps will need to be reverted. Please have a look through your changesets with a critical eye.

If you need help (to revert a changeset or something else), pop over #osm-ie on irc.

For the record if somebody is reading this : the problematic changesets have been reverted, thanks Mackerski.

Thank you for all the concerns and advises on copyright issue. I really appreciate it. However, I still have some confusion relates the copyright issue.

In fact, I’ve sent email to the organisation which owns the map I was using about the copyright issue, and I was informed that I’m allowed to use their data while editing OSM. However, I’m not totally familiar with all the copyright rule relates to OSM. Does the mail from the organisation mean that I can be totally free in using their data?

Here below is the mail content between us:

Hi there Ying Li

Thanks for your email. We’re happy for you to use our info when editing on OpenStreetMap. Where possible a reference to our maps should be used, but I know that is not possible in all circumstances.

Many regards and good luck

John Rice

Dear Sir or Madam,

I’m recently thinking of contributing to OpenStreetMap (http://www.openstreetmap.org/#map=5/51.500/-0.100) community, whose main project is to create and distribute free geographic data for the world that everybody can get access to through internet.

I was travelling in Ireland in May 2012 and I still keep some maps from that trip. One of them is a guide map from GLANCE. I checked your website but I didn’t find any information about copyright or how other people can reuse it or distribute it. Could you tell me the type of copyright of GLANCE guide maps? Can I use it as a source data when I’m editing on OpenStreetMap?

Thank you very much for your time!

Sincerely, Ying Li
