Camping in West Hoathly, West Sussex

Posted by Tom Chance on 21 September 2009 in English.

In between jobs and looking to escape London for some time to myself, I spent a couple of days out in the very pleasant hills and woods in West Sussex last week. Of course no camping trip is complete without a GPS and some detailed infill.

Villages are fun for this, they're often so small that you can quickly make the map really detailed without detracting from your holiday!

Buses in south east London

Posted by Tom Chance on 18 August 2009 in English.

I've been adding in some bus routes around Peckham for a few weeks now. With some of the routes I use them so often that it's pretty easy to do it all from memory, but I've needed to take a few rides to check one or two routes like the sloowwwwww P13. I've not managed to extend them the whole way south, though. I didn't fancy spending my whole weekend getting stuck in Norwood or Crystal Palace ;)

Getting the various one-way roads right in the relations is fiddly but the results look nice. I can't wait to see what Elephant & Castle looks like when the crazy number of bus routes are all plotted in... the numbering will extend about a mile along the road!

Now that Thomas Wood has imported all of the NAPTAN bus stops for London, I get to stick all of those into the relations as well. Not far off from having a half-decent public transport map of Peckham to match the cycle and default layers. Joy!

Some more relations in Peckham

Posted by Tom Chance on 8 August 2009 in English.

I've added in half of the P13 bus route and a load more house/street numbers. Adding in all the nodes, ways, tags and relations for house numbers is a bit laborious so I've been pretty slow adding these in.

When namefinder supports the numbering that will probably motivate me to do it a bit more quickly. Particularly for long roads, being able to find precisely the right place through search is very handy!

Art galleries in Peckham

Posted by Tom Chance on 4 August 2009 in English.

After a bit of a break from mapping, I added in the missing arts spaces around Peckham with lots of metadata. Basically a web site, short description and address.

My plan is to replace this Google map with something based on our Sutton Green Map, just as soon as Thomas finishes up the work grabbing data from the OSM database for FeatureServer rather than keeping our own data set for the POIs. This way updates to the OSM database will be neatly pulled out into clickable POIs for selected features we want to make more accessible, showing the address, web site and description for each POI.

Then I'm going to make a copy of the Sutton map but focus it on the Peckham area.

After so many years mapping in St Albans and London, with aerial imagery and (these days) all the basic features in place, that I forgot to take my GPS on holiday. We were in south west Scotland, Dumfries & Galloway to be more precise, or on the coast in the middle of nowhere sort of near the town of Kirkcudbridght get to the point.

Nevermind, I took some notes here and there and added in various roads from the NPE maps for the peninsula area around Borgue, a walk up a hill on Cairnsmore of Fleet and a bit of detail in the centre of Kircudbright. Plenty of work to be done in that part of Scotland though, and one of those nice opportunities to put Google, Bing, etc. to shame.

Just as soon as the coastline updates, the beaches will look a little less wonky too. Holiday snaps are up on Flickr as usual.
