How many contributors does OSM have?

Posted by SimonPoole on 20 May 2013 in English. Last updated on 7 December 2013.

We all know that while we have over a million, actually over 1.2 million now, user accounts, the number of actual contributors is quite a bit lower. Often you will see a number of 200’000 quoted, however that only considers the last editor of an object and not all the editors.

Analysing the mid May 2013 changeset dump gives a total of 335’000 unique user ids that have created a changeset. We can see this number increasing more or less linearly in recent years:

OpenStreetMap Accumulated Contributors per Month

Over the last 12 months we have averaged roughly 7’000 new contributors per month, in total a good 80’000 per year:

OpenStreetMap New Contributors per Month

The numbers only take half of May in to account so it is too early to see if the announcement of the iD editor will already have a noticeable effect. In the long run we hope for a clear increase in the number of account holders actually contributing.

Update:

May 2013 numbers now for the whole month, based on the early June changeset dump. Total number of contributors 340’311, new in May: 9357 While this isn’t a new record it is a good 2nd place.

Thanks for these stats I admit I use altogetherlost for the stats for the last edited current ~230,000

Another interesting point is that in the last 6 months we have doubled the registered users. From about 600,000 May 2012 to 1.2 million now.

Of that 80,000 or so new users have made an edit.

So the conversion rate for that is pretty low about 13% or so.

I wonder what we can do to increase this.

of course…Lies, damn lies and statistics….

I meant to also add that if we contrast that percentage with before start of project until May 2012 (600,000 registered users) we had 255,000 (335,000 - 80,000) users make an edit. Which was a healthy 42.5% making an edit.

This is the first sensible statistic showing registered user against contributors that I have seen up to now, and I thank you for it: Well done! What would be nice to know is how many registered users are, well just that: Users that produce maps etc. And what about the back-room boys that keep this complex system going: How many are there? Where are they? We contributors are worthless without these brilliant people. You all have my greatest respect. Thank-you
