Does your language have maps?

Posted by PlaneMad on 15 October 2015 in English.

Stumbled on the beautiful Multilingual Map Test tool following a comment on pratikyadav’s Hindi map post.

Not sure how Jochen works his magic, but all you give it is a language code and the tool renders a transparent overlay of name labels on the fly.

Seeing a world map in my native language Tamil for the first time in my life

It even allows you to define a fallback list of languages. Europe in हिन्दी, ಕನ್ನಡ, తెలుగు, தமிழ்

Did I mention we have 122 major languages in India? Someone put this tool on the OSM homepage already!

Hint for everybody who is interested in this topic:

See the OSM wiki about Map Internationalization

(Please tell us if there is missing something in that wiki article, or more stuff is outdated already)

Hello PlaneMad, original project page is here: http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Multilingual_maps_Wikipedia_project

I18n of maps is still a topic at Wikimedia: https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T112948 Should come to production with help of Mapbox’s vector tiles rendering. Perhaps you have a chance to support the project.

The actual bottleneck in the project seems that a missing c++ expert for: “Add hstore support to Mapnik’s c++ code – this will allow all languages to be stored in the vector tiles simultaneously.”[1]

Perhaps you know someone.

Greetings Tim
