Rae Lakes loop

Added the magnificent Rae Lakes Loop trail.

http://www.openstreetmap.org/browse/relation/1710944 and
http://ra.osmsurround.org/analyze.jsp?relationId=1710944

Some, ahem, innovations:

The permit station has adjacent toilets; they were simply amenity=toilets, I added toilets:type=ventilated_improved_pit

Some people going hiking get squeamish about these things, so they tend to be in trail books, and as such should probably be in the database.

Likewise, when I added the campsites at Lower, Middle and Upper Paradise Valley, I added a tag to each campsite indicating (unlike most backcountry primitive camping areas) that there are toilets=yes and toilets:type=exposed_pit

Finally, I added tags for bearproof_storage=yes to those campsites.

Fun!

Naming passes seems difficult...

Posted by MrRedwood on 13 August 2011 in English.

I've just added the Muir Hut as a "weather shelter" at Muir Pass, including the link to the Muir Pass wikipedia page. But when I try to add the designation Muir Pass itself to one segment of the overall trail, there isn't room for yet another name, since "name" is rightfully taken by JMT and alt_name by PCT. So how to designate a secondary attribute? Hmm.

I'm also disappointed that "trailhead" doesn't seem to be an option, when even little things like wifi access point are.

Flirting with OSM

Posted by MrRedwood on 13 August 2011 in English.

I discovered (via gpsvisualizer.com) that some trails are visible in OSM. Since backpacking is my favorite hobby, I have a lot of knowledge of trails in my region, and I want to experiment with adding data.

I've just modified the JMT/PCT at the Wood's Creek crossing to note the suspension footbridge at that crossing. since fords can make this trail problematic early in the season, knowing where bridges are versus fords might be useful.
