Nice to meet you!

I’m Michael Montani, a GIS consultant at United Nations Global Service Centre (UNGSC). Here I work as coordinator of the crowdsourcing activities of UN Mappers, a community of mapping enthusiasts which support UN Peacekeeping missions through the UN Maps program.

I train UN personnel, local communities and national cartographic agencies on OpenStreetMap community and editing, as well as open-source GIS and other stuff. I mostly map in Africa, and I built capacities of many volunteers worldwide.

Formerly, I’ve been co-founder and president of PoliMappers, the first European chapter of YouthMappers. In 2018, I have been awarded of the 2018 YouthMappers Research Fellowship, for which I conducted a research project on the usage of OSM data to control an endemic disease in Senegal with crowdsourcing, on-site capacity building and machine learning. I have a MSc in Geoinformatics Engineering at Politecnico di Milano.
