Winter pub meet-up in Oxford Circus

Posted by Harry Wood on 13 January 2010 in English.

How many country names can you think of which end with the letter 'O'?

We huddled like penguins at last night's deep deep winter pub meet-up. Not because it was cold in the pub, but because we were a bit short of space around our little table in the upstairs room of the Red Lion (The pub is even on the map now. Thanks Dan!). In total there must have been ten or fifteen people. Nick Black came along and the girls were out in force: Jenny, Emma and Francine.

We weren't even at a pub quiz, but quizmaster Ollie just couldn't resist giving us the little brainteaser. ....How are you getting on with it by the way? Thought of any countries ending in 'O'? ...There's a really big one. Eight times the size of the UK. You should at least get that one!

TomH mentioned we're posssibly going to be receiving a donation of a bunch of new servers. Dont know the details yet.

I can't remember what else we talked about really. A few too many alpine lagers.

Various bits of interesting news when I got home. Mikel has uploaded the Kibera data. It looks great! And there's been a new disaster, which means a new HOT activation: Haiti earthquake response. More on these things on my blog 'The developing world on OpenStreetMap - Armchair mapping possibilities' (I was kind of targeting this at non-OSMers or newbies, so pass on the link, but don't bother reading it :-P )

Next meet-up will be Wednesday 27th (as illustrated by my secretary) ...although a few of the usual OSM gang will be going to #geomob on Thu 21st.

So how many country names end with the letter 'O'? ...I don't know the answer. You'll have to ask Ollie

Unfortunately I couldn't make it, a little thing called a Final Haskell Programming exam at 10am this morning got in the way...

Looking forward to the 27th though!

I can only think of Lesotho and Kosovo (although the latter is not universally recognized as a country). Ah, I only thought of Mexico just now. :-)
