Translating OSM Diary entries

Posted by GOwin on 19 October 2017 in English.

I always enjoy reading many diary entries, and since this is a very global community, it’s not a surprise to see many people writing in their native languages.

I’d love to see an translate link or button under each entry (and comments). It’s not perfect, but for the most part, you get a gist of what the author is saying:

Maybe because it’s pretty much a commodity these days (even built into some web browsers)?

For the OSM weekly we tend to offer both the original article and a translation. I tend to use whichever of Google Translate or Microsoft Translator seems to give the better answer, based on my knowledge of the original language.

Which online translation mechanism would you suggest should be built into OSM?

@SomeoneElse Yes, those two are probably the top options. Like you, I tend to switch between services, depending on provides better contextual translation.

@ thermo_nuclear Сны-они свободны! ;)

I havent found a fully Open Source Translation engine, but this one is Crowdsourced (like Mapillary) https://mymemory.translated.net
