Mount Macedon

Posted by Craig Feuerherdt on 22 January 2010 in English.

Finally got around to updating my surveys from Mount Macedon. Added in the picnic grounds along the tourist road into Mount Macedon. Also added in the memorial cross.
I have taken to the back roads when travelling around. I added a heap of these roads between Bendigo & Tatura as well. Will slowly fill areas in as I get a chance.

Trip to Canberra

Posted by Craig Feuerherdt on 29 December 2009 in English. Last updated on 31 December 2009.

Had Christmas in Canberra this year and was impressed to see the currency of the data - my brother-in-law lives in one of the new estates which is all mapped. Well done to the Canberra guys!
Travelled the Hume Highway/Freeway. Collected parts of the north-bound lane of the Hume between Albury and Holbrook. Need someone to collect the south-bound lane and update highway to "motorway" where appropriate (impossible to know with only 1 side mapped! North & south-bound sections between Holbrook & Pettit have been mapped. The south-bound section around Pettit requires work - I didn't have the GPS on. Aside from that should all be good.
On the way back to Bendigo we took a different route, headed west out of Holbrook through to Culcairn and then meandered down to Corowa so there are a few new roads to add in. Also pick up a few new roads (including an unmapped 'C' road) in Victoria to add to the coverage. Will get around to mapping them in the next week or so. I am also working on a list of routes (M, A, B & C roads) for Victoria so everyone can see what needs to be done. Will put it on the wiki in due course.
OSM is great - gets you off the 'well trodden' routes and makes you see some of the magnificent (if not dry) landscape.

Cohuna added to the map

Posted by Craig Feuerherdt on 11 December 2009 in English.

Added Cohuna (Australia) onto the map. Had a meeting up there and picked up the main route to/from Cohuna as well.
Have also been fixing up the route numbers around Bendigo which is probably 80% complete. The actual ways have the appropriate ref=*, just need to ensure the relationships (routes) are in place and then it should be done. Any people in Victoria, if you haven't already been using it, the "Driver's Guide to Rural Victoria" (http://bit.ly/78IgzX) has all the coded routes marked.
Another thing that has been bugging me is the separated roads around Bendigo, so I have started creating separate ways where appropriate to better represent the roads and associated turn-restrictions.
Still heaps to do, but if there wasn't then we'd all be bored!

Put in some effort this morning to trace my GPS tracks from the weekend.
I am very surprised to see how little of the Barossa Valley is mapped given the popularity of it as a tourist destination and its proximity to Adelaide. I am originally from Tanunda. Anyway, I as back home to see the family and started adding additional streets and updating existing data. The streets from the south end of Tanunda, west of the Murray Street up to Angas Street are done. Basedow Road south is also done, up to the railway. Another hour in the car would have all streets complete (east of Murray Street and between Angas Street & Para Road) - a task for next time :)
We also stopped at a few locations on the (arduous) drive (with 3 kids under 5) from Bendigo. The boys took the GPS for a walk on a few occasions so I have added a few bits and pieces from their first (?) survey.
Better go wake the boys and get ready for work!

new GPS, will map!

Posted by Craig Feuerherdt on 19 November 2009 in English.

Finally my new GPS has arrived - Garmin etrx Legend HCx. Somewhat smaller than I thought it would be but that is a good thing.
Took it out for its virgin voyage and collected a few missing streets in central Bendigo (Australia). (Definitely no chance of hitting an iceberg today with the temperature nearly touching 40C!).
Will start picking up some more detail around home when I take the kids for a walk/ride. Hopefully the Bendigo map will change often (and not just from my contributions).

Streets from orienteering map

Posted by Craig Feuerherdt on 27 October 2009 in English.

Finally found (made) some time to test Map Warper (http://warper.geothings.net/) to rectify an orienteering map so I could trace the streets in Long Gully, North Bendigo and southern parts of White Hills (see map). Everything went smoothly and the data is now in. I have added the streets but will need to do a recce to document the names.
I am a member of the orienteering club here in Bendigo and we have most of Bendigo covered by street maps. While the maps are originally created from copyrighted aerial photography, all the streets are physically validated/verified to ensure we have mapped public/private land etc.
Plan to add some of the other data over the coming weeks which will ultimately see a large portion of Bendigo's streets mapped.

Bendigo to Adelaide

Posted by Craig Feuerherdt on 25 May 2009 in English.

Finally got the opportunity to travel from Bendigo through to Adelaide by car.
Updated Wimmera Highway through to St Arnaud then St Arnaud to Minyip, Minyip to Dimboola. Also updated the route from Murray Bridge to The Barossa Valley (home) including a few residential streets.
That will be the last additions until I return from my 10 week holiday. Happy mapping in Victoria :)

Have made heaps of updates around Bendigo, Heathcote & surrounds.

Bendigo
Finally got my GPS tracks traced and uploaded including
1) linear trail from reservoir in Kangaroo Flat through to Bendigo, including all bridges
2) all streets south of the creek between Myrtle and Golden Square
3) Some of the major thoroughfares through Bendigo

Bendigo Surrounds
1) Mapped all the "new" subdivison at Lockwood South through to Bradford Road
2) Some of the major routes to the south/south west of the city including Tannery lane and all adjacent streets
3) Additional roads between Tannery lane and Lake Eppalock

Heathcote
Tied this in with an orienteering event, including
1) Heathcote Costerfield back road
2) Pink cliffs historic reserve, the walking tracks

Doubt there will be too much ore done before I head overseas for 10 weeks, returning early August. Good chance to utilise OSM on the GPS while away and see how well UK and Ireland is mapped.

Bendigo & surrounds

Posted by Craig Feuerherdt on 4 May 2009 in English.

Continuing to take the GPS when I jump in the car. Have collected some more major roads in and around Bendigo which will provide a good reference for infilling.
Had a meeting in Cobram so I took a few back roads. It is a good way to see the countryside while contributing to OSM. Collected some of the streets around the centre of Cobram which I will load in the coming weeks.

Have been slowly adding to the street network in and around central Bendigo Australia. Every time I go out in the car the GPS is with and I take different routes to/from where I am going. HAve also mapped the creek through the centre of town, contributed to the tracks in Rosliand Park and added information around Lake Weeroona.
Have also updated the major routes between Bendgio and Shepparton as I am constantly over there for meetings.

First additions/corrections

Posted by Craig Feuerherdt on 20 December 2008 in English.

I have finally got around to uploading some data and contributing to OSM. The last few years have been hectic with a few children being added to the family and attempting to complete my masters degree. Now that the masters has been handed in I have some free time.
I have added some of the back roads between Lake Boga & Kerang (Australia). These will be added to reasonably regularly. I have also updated the Loddon Valley Highway from my GPS track (Trimble GeoXH). In time I hope to add to/update streets in and around Bendigo (home).
Are there any other OSM users from Bendigo?
Happy editing!
