I like OSM because it is an open database license project. Moreover, mapping has changed my view on my environment. I have learned to pay attention to details I have not considered important before.

My main mapping region is the South-Western region of and around Munich. I add shops, opening hours, house numbers, tracks, cycleways, public transport information, and the like. For mapping, I mostly use both JOSM and Vespucci.

These are my favorite tools for OSM readouts:

Bicycle Tags Map

Excellent POI Map and thematic maps by flosm!

Open Snow Map

Operating hours map - doesn’t always work

ÖPNV map - doesn’t work any mmore?!?

For more complex OSM searches, I use the Overpass Turbo.

What’s quite useful is the Keep right data consistency check. The given link leads to downtown Munich.

I recommend planning smaller bicycle trips with the BRouter web client. This tool is free, very fast, really easy to use, and relies on up to date OSM data. It enables easy modification of routes suggested by the tool (just drag) and gpx file export. The gpx files generated with BRouter can be uploaded to a smartphone and used with tools like OsmAnd. The BRouter can also be installed as an app on a smartphone. In this case, it is not a stand alone tool, it only works if one has installed OsmAnd, Locus, or Oruxmaps. However, modifying routes calculated by the BRouter app is not possible.

On my Android smartphone, I like best OsmAnd with contour lines and hillshading features. The maps are saved locally to the phone (external sd card can be selected as a default), so one can fully use the app abroad or in areas with poor network coverage. Maps are updated monthly. GPS tracks generated for example with the BRouter web client can be uploaded to OsmAnd. OsmAnd enabled offline address search. Simply activating the ‘online maps’ plugin additionally enables full POI search by name (Nominatim) in a way similar to Google maps.

Easier to use but with much less options is Maps with Me. This tool works offline, too.

What is still missing, in my opinion, is a really good OSM based vehicle navigation app with consideration of live traffic and full private data protection. A great deal of navigation use cases is certainly bypassing traffic jams. OsmAnd seems to have given up such a goal (if it has ever existed). Hopefully maps.me will implement such a functionality sooner or later.
