Description

Hi, I'm Ash Kyd.

Y'know, I'm that guy. That one who's always hanging around. Sometimes I do GPS things, but I'm mainly mad for metadata. Watch me name your streets!

I'm based in the north east of Brisbane, in Banyo. You can find me in the blogosphere, or at your disposal for all your web development needs.

I'm currently mapping the north side along the Shorncliffe and Caboolture railway lines (easy access, that way.) Other pet areas I'm focusing on are Narangba and Caboolture on the far north side. Feel free to get in contact if you're in the area, want to network, or whatever.

My Gear

My set-up involves one Freedom Keychain GPS 2000 attached via bluetooth to my Nokia 6120c. It's not powerful enough to multitask more than a few apps at once, but it gets the job done (and it's more than the iPhone can do anyway ;).

Between the Nokia Location Tagger and Mobile Trail Explorer software, I've got just about everything I need to record trails, geotag photos, and take waypoints on my handset. It's a brilliant setup, so if you're after a cheap OpenStreetMap rig and you've already got a reasonably new smartphone I can't recommend it enough. (Although look out because with a Bluetooth GPS going, your battery life will plummet. I can usually only get just about 5 hours out of my 2 year old handset before I need a recharge.)

Here's a picture of my GPS rig.

I can't edit OSM data live, so my system usually involves taking GPX trails ans waypoints which I can later overlay in JOSM. If I'm doing waypoint-centric work and don't need GPX trails, I'll simply use the camera on my phone and use the geotags on my photos (which will show up in JOSM as waypoints anyway.) I've trialled audio waypoints, but it's not for me (I never seem to get around to processing them.)

I'd eventually like to get myself an Android phone to streamline things, but this is a long term goal I'm working towards.
