The recent launch of the modern highway R3a that links China, Laos and Thailand is expected to bring economic prosperity such as increased trade and investments to the Golden Triangle area.
This route links Thailand through the yet-to-be-built Thai-Lao bridge in Chiang Khong district of Chiang Rai and Houei Xai district of Bokeo province in Laos. It is planned to be used for trading purposes but tourism is also taking advantages on this because it serves as a gateway to Laos, Southern China and Vietnam. Especially, traveling to the Southern China City of Yunnan which is called Xishuangbanna (in local dialect) or Jinghong (in Chinese) or Sibsongpanna (in Thai) is now booming.
The Xishuangbanna (Jinghong,Yunnan, China) 4-days-3-nights tour is another interesting package tour for those who want to explore the ethnic Tai minorities in Jinghong. Traveling is done by roads from Chiang Khong, Chiang Rai Thailand crossing the Mekong River to Laos. Transportation takes a full-day trip to reach Jinghong in the evening.
