Almost all the gnis schools are off or entirely wrong. IMHO they should just be deleted unless touched by a human. We can get newer data from NYC, I'm sure.

I'm fine with deleting at least the ones that are historical.

Historical features (by GNIS definition) are features which no longer exist. It's GNIS's way of saying "This used to be here but isn't anymore". Since OSM reflects ground truth, we can safely delete historical objects.
